Friendship Heights is an urban and commercial neighborhood located in the northwest quadrant of Washington, DC that was originally inhabited by the Piscataway tribe of Native Americans. It was primarily agricultural until it began to develop as a streetcar suburb and the Chevy Chase Land Company, which previously developed nearby Chevy Chase, began developing it as a high-end residential area with large homes and estates.
In the early 1900s, commercial development began, with the opening of the Friendship Shopping Center in 1931, one of the first suburban shopping centers in the U.S. By the 1960s, neighborhood had become a major retail center, and high-rise apartment and office buildings were erected.
